San Jose State vs. Georgia State, Cure Bowl 2015: Time, TV schedule, live stream and 3 things to know

Here’s how to watch this year’s newest bowl game.

Scott Olmos-USA TODAY Sports

It may be this year’s sign that there are too many bowls, but it’s also prime time football on Dec. 19. Get your popcorn ready, the inaugural Cure Bowl between San Jose State and Georgia State kicks off on bowl season’s first night. Television coverage is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.

On the morning of November 14, Georgia State was 2-6 on the season and sinking to a third consecutive losing season since coming to FBS football in 2013. Four weeks -- and four wins -- later, the Panthers are headed to their first bowl game. Georgia State has fielded one of the nation's most prolific passing attacks, racking up 347 yards per game through the air with senior quarterback Nick Arbuckle at the helm.

San Jose State finished the season 5-7, but qualified for a bowl game due to its high Academic Progress Score. While the losing record was disappointing, the Spartans nevertheless improved on last season’s three-win tally. As good as Georgia State has been at throwing the ball, San Jose State has been even better at stopping the pass. The Spartans are second nationally in passing yards allowed, at just 154 per game.

Three big things to know

First-timers. Georgia State, which has played competitive football for just six seasons and FBS football for only the last three, makes its first bowl appearance. While this is San Jose State’s 10th bowl appearance, third-year coach Ron Caragher is making his first bowl trip, having come to San Jose State after a successful six-year tenure at FCS program San Diego.

Friendly skies? Each of these teams does one thing extremely well, and those strengths are diametrically opposed. Can Nick Arbuckle solve a San Jose State passing defense that has held opponents under 160 yards per game and faced the fewest pass attempts of any FBS team all season? Or will San Jose State force Georgia State’s non-existent running game (103 yards per game, 123rd nationally) to carry the Panthers offense?

The Cure. Proceeds from the Cure Bowl will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. It’s the first of three bowl games being played this season at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. It’s also one of two new bowl games this year, joining the Arizona Bowl among the newest postseason exhibitions.
