Kyler Murray signs with Oklahoma, landing the Sooners another major QB transfer

Baker Mayfield has sure worked out for Bob Stoops so far.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Former five-star Texas A&M quarterback Kyler Murray has signed a financial aid agreement with Oklahoma and will join the program in the upcoming spring semester, the school announced Thursday. Murray split time with Kyle Allen, another former five-star prospect who's also transferring, during the 2015 season, but decided that the time was right to get out of College Station.

He’ll be eligible to play football in 2017.

Per the terms of Murray’s transfer release, he was available to transfer anywhere except other SEC programs or teams on A&M’s schedule for the next four years. The most notable non-conference teams on Texas A&M’s schedule between now and 2019 are UCLA and Clemson.

The Sooners pursued Murray in high school, getting an official visit, but he ended up choosing the Aggies instead. As a true freshman this season, he completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 5.7 yards per attempt, with five touchdowns against seven interceptions. He also ran for 6.3 yards per carry and one touchdown.

Once he’s eligible and on the field, Murray could be next in line to replace Oklahoma’s current star QB transfer from a Texas school, Baker Mayfield. Mayfield was one of the best players in the nation this year, and has one year of eligibility remaining.

Murray could also play baseball at Oklahoma. There was some thought that he could concentrate on baseball rather than play football, as he was thought of as a potential first-round pick before he opted out of the 2015 MLB Draft earlier in 2015.
