A New Year’s stalwart faces an upstart mid-major in the first New Year’s Six bowl game of the year.
Kickoff between the Cougars and Seminoles is set for noon ET, with streaming available through WatchESPN. The game’s also on ESPN.
Houston replaced former head coach Tony Levine with Tom Herman during the offseason, and the effects were immediate. The Cougars won their first 10 games of the season, the first 10-0 start for Houston since 2011, and took the American Athletic Conference title with a 24-13 win over Temple.
Houston has not played in a bowl game of the Peach Bowl's prestige since the 1985 Cotton Bowl, when the Cougars were Southwest Conference champions. Herman has done it with a balanced offensive attack, averaging 247 passing yards and 240 rushing yards per game and posting more than 40 points per contest.
Florida State managed 10 wins and a second-place finish in the ACC Atlantic Division during what most fans believed to be a rebuilding season.
Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson, who started under center through the season's first seven games, gave way to junior Sean Maguire after a shocking loss to Georgia Tech, but the quarterback has mattered far less to the Seminoles than the player lined up behind him. Halfback Dalvin Cook has run for 1,658 yards and 18 touchdowns this season, and caught another 218 yards in passes.
