No. 9 Florida State junior starting quarterback Sean Maguire was carted off in the first quarter of the Peach Bowl against No. 18 Houston. Maguire took a hit low while scrambling out of bounds and landed awkwardly. After limping to the sideline, he was carted off and seen pointing toward his left ankle.
FSU QB Sean Maguire returns to play in a tape boot minutes after being carted off
FSU announced Maguire was questionable to return with a lower leg injury, and yet he returned.
The score at the time was 7-3, Cougars.
He only missed a few minutes of game time, then reappeared with a ton of tape around his ankle. ESPN’s Tom Luginbill reported there’s a heavy apparatus inside all that tape.
Maguire’s traded the starting job with former Notre Dame QB Everett Golson this season, but Golson didn’t make it to this game, which didn’t seem like that big of a deal until right now.
FSU’s third-stringer is freshman J.J. Cosentino, who’d thrown all of six passes all year. It went about as you’d expect.
Maguire played in seven games for the Noles this year, with decent numbers comparable to Golson’s. FSU’s strengths are its defense and running game, but having either an immobile QB or an untested QB puts just about any result on the table.
