Lou Holtz is no longer an ESPN college football analyst after the two sides recently agreed to part ways, according to a report from Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated. Deitsch reported Holtz leaving ESPN “was closer to a mutual agreement between the parties than Holtz getting forced out.”

Holtz worked as an ESPN analyst since 2004, notably joining Mark May and Rece Davis on Saturday College Football Final. The 78-year-old was known for his heavy support of Notre Dame, having coached the Fighting Irish for 11 seasons. In May 2014 Dan Murphy of Blue and Gold Illustrated reported Holtz planned to retire following the 2014 season. That may not be the case here, according to Holtz’s agent.
“Lou enjoyed his time and friendships made at ESPN and looks forward to other opportunities in college football,” Holtz’s agent Sandy Montag said via Sports Illustrated.
Holtz’s departure from ESPN means even more change for Saturday College Football Final. The show was already set for significant change with Davis leaving to take over hosting duties of College GameDay. Now with Holtz also leaving, only May remains of the longtime trio.
