Notre Dame’s partial membership means ACC unlikely to change football schedules

The Atlantic Coast Conference will not join the Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 in adding another league game.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The ACC is not planning to expand to a nine-game conference football schedule in the near future, and the reason why is simple: Notre Dame is playing at least four games every season against ACC opponents.

In 2013, Notre Dame entered a football scheduling agreement with the ACC through 2025. The Fighting Irish will play four to six games against ACC opponents each season while the agreement is in place. Notre Dame is a member of the ACC for all other sports.

Other leagues have moved, or are moving, to nine-game conference schedules. The Pac-12 and Big 12 already play nine league games per season, and the Big Ten starts a nine-game schedule in 2016. The SEC voted against a nine-game schedule in 2014, though all teams are required to play a “Power 5” opponent in their non-conference schedules every year.
