Alabama is playing Kentucky on Saturday night, and the Crimson Tide started sluggishly, getting stuck in a 3-3 tie with a terrible opponent in the second quarter before finally scoring a touchdown.
Alabama tried to down a punt at the last possible second. It did not go well.
Try to imagine the silliest thing that could agitate Nick Saban, and you’ll get something roughly like this.

Eventually, Bama’s going to win, and this will not be such a big deal. Probably.
Alabama punter JK Scott has a good leg, and he executed a brilliant, rolling corner kick that should’ve pinned Kentucky deep inside its own 5-yard line. But Alabama coverage man Tony Brown, in trying to be maybe a little bit too perfect in downing Scott’s punt, didn’t keep his eye on the ball. So that’s a touchback.
The result was 20 yards of improved field position for Kentucky, which, against Alabama’s defense, just isn’t that big a deal. But it’s probably the most egregious punt-downing failure of the season so far, which is at least something.
Alabama’s not likely to lose to Kentucky. This is not likely to become a metaphor. But it is still unfortunate.
