Fired Baylor coach Art Briles showed up at Browns practice as a guest coach

Fired at Baylor in May, Briles keeps surfacing.

Former Baylor coach Art Briles showed up at Cleveland Browns practice on Wednesday as a guest coach, Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reported, as part of a temporary stint with the franchise.

Baylor fired Briles in disgrace in May, when a scandal came to a head over Briles’ program’s treatment of sexual assault allegations against Baylor football players. Since then, Briles has said he wants to get back into coaching, and now Browns coach Hue Jackson is giving him at least a temporary opportunity.

“What happened at Baylor’s at Baylor,” Jackson said, calling Briles a “tremendous offensive-minded football coach.” He was “specifically focusing on the quarterbacks,” Cabot said.

“I respect [concerns about Briles’ character] and understand that trail, but, at the same time, I think everybody deserves an opportunity to kind of do what they do,” Jackson told reporters Wednesday. “I respect everybody’s feeling, and I don’t condone anything or not, but that’s not for me to judge. Again, the opportunity to pick his brain and to have him be around and talk to him and get to know him outside of all of that in a different capacity is what was important to me.”

Video of Jackson's remarks on Briles, from Cleveland.com:

In the months since losing his job in Waco, Briles has remained a looming figure. He showed up in the stands at the Baylor-Rice game in September, when the Rice band made fun of Baylor's Title IX enforcement, before Rice apologized.

His son, Baylor offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, sprawled out the shorthand for “Coach Art Briles” on both of his hands during Baylor’s season opener, and members of the Baylor coaching staff simultaneously tweeted an infamous Briles hashtag while pushing back this week on an unrelated story.
