We’re having elections in America on Tuesday. You’ve likely heard about them. But have you heard about our country’s really big news of the day?
EMU football is wearing cool VOTE helmets on Election Day. (The timing is a bit awkward.)
I like the idea. I just don’t love the execution.

Indeed, Eastern Michigan visits Ball State for a 7 p.m. ET MAC game in Muncie, Ind. And the Eagles are wearing helmets that say VOTE on the front, with names of presidents written out inside the stripe that runs down the helmet’s center.
Looks pretty nice. I respect that Abraham Lincoln’s name is the most immediately legible of all the presidents’, because he’s my favorite president.
Which President Bush is the one typed out in bigger letters? I demand to know.
So, this is cool. Good on EMU for seizing its Election Night moment.
But there’s one thing about this bit of messaging.
The game kicks off at 7 p.m. ET, which is also 7 p.m. in most of Michigan, including the Eagles’ hometown of Ypsilanti. Polls in Michigan close at 8 p.m.
So, let’s imagine someone’s sitting at home, turns on the CBS Sports Network to watch the game, and feels inspired by the VOTE reminder on the front of EMU’s helmets. That person would then have one hour to get in line at a polling place, so he or she would have to fairly immediately stop watching EMU to go vote. You don’t want that, EMU.
It’s a classic case of a good idea with a shaky practical application.
EMU’s having an entire “presidential leadership week” leading up to the game.
I’d be ready to run through a wall after this one:
Some current symbolism, whether EMU intends as much or not:
This one’s kind of a canned stump-speech line, but fine:
OK:
If you’re looking for a college football distraction while election returns are coming back, EMU-Ball State is an option.
Also around 7:20 p.m. ET is the second Playoff rankings release of the year, which means you’ll get Playoff Twitter and Elections Twitter, all at once. There’s no way — no way! — anyone will get riled up tonight.
