Jameis Winston reportedly settles federal sexual assault lawsuit

The alleged incident stems from December 2012.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston has reportedly settled the federal lawsuit filed against him by a woman, Erica Kinsman, who accused him of sexually assaulting her in December of 2012. The alleged incident occurred when he was the quarterback at Florida State University.

“The case has been resolved to the satisfaction of the parties,” John Clune, the woman’s attorney, told ESPN on Wednesday night.

Winston was not charged criminally, and he was cleared in a university Title IX hearing from the alleged incident.

According to ESPN, the suit was scheduled to go to trial in a U.S. District Court in Orlando, Fla., on April 3. Kinsman filed the lawsuit against Winston in April 2015.

Kinsman filed the lawsuit Thursday in Circuit Court of the Ninth Judicial District, and it alleges “sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress arising out of forcible rape.”

This is all stemming from the same incident in December 2012 for which Winston was investigated in late 2013. In a statement, Kinsman’s attorney said, “Over the past two years, this survivor of sexual violence has had to endure a delinquent police investigation, a hostile FSU athletic department and Mr. Winston’s bullying lawyer.

“But the more these forces sought to silence her, the more determined she has become to step forward and hold Jameis Winston accountable for his actions. With the support of her family, she is prepared for this fight and for the counterclaims and the smear campaigns that will surely follow.”

In January, Florida State agreed to pay $950,000 to settle the Title IX lawsuit filed by Kinsman against the school.
