Alabama and Florida just played one of the weirdest quarters of football in a long time

Bama destroyed the Gators, but we can always remember the fun part.

Offense was supposed to be at a real premium in the SEC title game. Florida scored on its first offensive series of the game and became the first team to score an offensive touchdown on Alabama since October.

But the Gators also threw two quick interceptions (one of which was a pick-six).

Alabama, on the other hand, started the game with 16 points on negative-seven yards of total offense and only six plays through the end of the first quarter.

But who needs competent offense if the Tide can do this with their special teams? The Tide blocked a punt and returned it for a TD.

Not to be outdone, Florida’s special teams said, “Anything you can do, I can do better,” and blocked the ensuing extra point and ran it back all the way for two points.

But Florida is probably so not used to scoring points that they’re uncertain what to do in celebration of the achievement, and so this happened.

It is indeed hard to act like you’ve been there when you in fact haven’t. Oh, and let’s not forget that on the ensuing kickoff, Alabama’s kicker got hurt.

Your really weird first quarter scoring recap:

  • A Florida offensive touchdown against Alabama’s defense.
  • A field goal.
  • A pick-six.
  • A blocked punt return for TD.
  • And a defensive PAT conversion.

The inevitability of an Alabama win soon set in (the Tide scored a legitimate offensive TD early in the second quarter, then stormed to a 54-16 win), but we will always have this really weird first quarter to fall back on when we remember the actually interesting parts of this game.
