This year’s Orange Bowl, which is a part of the New Year’s Six slate, looks like it’ll be a hell of a battle between No. 6 Michigan and No. 11 Florida State.
Jim Harbaugh is really excited to see FSU plant the fiery spear at the Orange Bowl
Florida State faces Michigan in this year’s Orange Bowl.
On Wednesday, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh spoke to the media, and specifically said he’s looking forward to Florida State’s mascot throwing the spear onto the middle of the field.
”I’ve always wanted to go there and see what that atmosphere was like in person.” Harbaugh said via the Tallahassee Democrat. “This will be as close as I’ve ever been to that. I’m excited for that. I know I’m going to get some chills when that Appaloosa comes riding out there.”
In case you aren’t familiar with this longtime Nole tradition, here’s a brief backstory: FSU’s mascot is Chief Osceola, which represents the historical Seminole tribe leader Osceola. Before each home game, Osceola rides out on an Appaloosa horse named Renegade, and throws a fiery spear onto the middle of the field.
Harbaugh was particularly excited about seeing this in person. While he said he’s never been to an FSU game, it’s something that’s apparently on his bucket list.
“Is he going to do it? Does he do it at the bowl game?” Harbaugh asked FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher at a joint news conference via ESPN. “Well, you have our permission. I want to see that.”
Apparently Harbaugh’s wish has been granted, as Florida State’s associate athletic director said on Twitter that Osceola and Renegade will make the trip to Miami.
“I want to see that. That’s one of the cool things ... We have cool things and other teams have cool things, but that is right up there as one of the coolest things.”
Leave it to Harbaugh to watch part of a college football game like a fan.
