Boston College couldn’t even score a touchdown in its own dang spring game

Boston College played a spring game and the final score was 6-2. SIX TO TWO!

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

In 2015, Boston College’s offense was aggressively bad. They never scored more than 17 points against an FBS opponent, were shut out by Florida State and Wake Forest, and lost a 9-7 game to Duke. They were so bad that in spite of a defense that ranked amongst the top 5 in the nation according to S&P+, they went 0-8 in ACC play. They were really good at defense, and so, so bad at offense.

So in Boston College’s spring game, BC’s offense had to play BC’s defense, and oh jeez that’s a very bad idea:

That's right: Boston College split its team down the middle and had the two sides play against each other, and neither of the two offenses was able to score once, even against diluted defense. To be fair, the game was played with 10 minute quarters and a running clock for the second half (thanks to a BC alum who was there for pointing this out to us) but still, that seems like more than eight points worth of football.

Spring games often have funky scoring systems to account for the fact that it’s a glorified intrasquad scrimmage, but that wasn’t the case here. This game had regular scoring, and featured two field goals and a safety. We even had a 3-2 scoreline at one point:

There was hope BC would be better on offense this year -- in part because they have a shiny new QB, former 4-star recruit and Kentucky transfer Patrick Towles, in part because they have a shiny new OC, Scot Loeffler from Virginia Tech, and in part because COME ON IT HAS TO BE BETTER THAN LAST YEAR -- but it doesn't look like it right now. Sure, this is great news for BC's defense, but if their offense is as bad as it was last year, BC can have the best defense in college football and still miss a bowl game. Check out BC's official Twitter feed and take a shot every time you see the word "punt" and I'll come to your funeral.

Spring games are weird endeavors and it’s hard to take much away from them. But I can tell you this: Boston College’s offense will probably be bad this year.
