The Dollar General Bowl is now a real college football game

The GoDaddy Bowl is no more.

On Tuesday, the GoDaddy Bowl’s Twitter account teased a “BIG announcement.”

Sure enough, the account dropped a huge bombshell on Wednesday morning: The game is switching its sponsorship. Everybody, say hello to The Dollar General Bowl.

The game pits the Sun Belt against the MAC at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. Last season’s GoDaddy Bowl was an absolute beatdown, with Georgia Southern taking home a 58-27 win over Bowling Green.

Per a Bowl release:

Dollar General was founded in 1939 and ranked #139 [sic] on the Fortune 500 list in 2016 with $20.4 billion in fiscal year 2015 net sales. The company provides everyday low prices, value and convenience to customers on products most used and replenished from America’s most trusted brands and its private, 100 percent satisfaction guaranteed brands.

Participants in the 2015 GoDaddy Bowl received a “Wilson souvenir football, custom bowl logo watch, Lit Cooler - 22 quart logo cooler and custom Sol Republic punk speaker.” Its unclear if the players in the inaugural Dollar General Bowl will simply receive cheaper versions of those items, or something else entirely. It wouldn’t be flashy, but a Dollar General gift card could be quite a practical gift to all of the unpaid college kids playing in the game.

Just one small piece of advice: whoever runs the account would do well to change its handle sometime soon.
