Stanford seals win over UCLA with this Piesman Trophy-eligible touchdown

A defensive lineman scored the clinching touchdown. This is a beautiful way to seal a 22-13 win.

No. 7 Stanford took on unranked UCLA at Rose Bowl Stadium, and the Bruins came out fighting. UCLA managed to take a 10-3 lead by halftime, and the defense held the Cardinal offense to just two field goals throughout most of the second half.

UCLA scored a field goal with six minutes left in the game to extend its lead to 13-9, but they were unable to capitalize on their last offensive possession to give Stanford the ball back with just over two minutes to go in the game.

Cardinal QB Ryan Burns wasted no time and got the offense to midfield on a 23-yard pass on first down. The Bruins’ passing attack continued to chip away downfield, and was able to get down deep into UCLA territory on the Bruins’ 19 yard-line with less than a minute left. Then on second down from the UCLA 8, Burns hit JJ Arsega-Whiteside in the end zone for the Cardinals’ first touchdown of the night and a three-point Stanford lead.

UCLA got the ball back with a little less than 30 seconds to go, but Bruins quarterback Josh Rosen was sacked and fumbled, which was recovered by Stanford’s 6’3, 263-pounds defensive end Solomon Thomas, who took it to the house to seal the win, and he beautifully put his name in the hat for the Piesman Trophy in the process.

So for now, it looks like Stanford is still very much the Pac-12 favorite. The Cardinal will play Washington Friday in Seattle in what will be a massive Pac-12 north matchup.
