Why’s Bill Belichick praising Rutgers? Well, he kinda always does.

BB loves those Scarlet Knights.

When we talk about Rutgers on the internet, it’s usually about how bad they are at something. When Bill Belichick talks about Rutgers, he’s singing their praises in that trademark monotone postgame drawl.

There are three Rutgers players on New England’s active roster, and all three of them got interceptions in the win over Houston in Saturday’s playoff game. Belichick selected Duron Harmon and Logan Ryan within eight picks of each other in the 2013 draft, and Devin McCourty is a six-time captain in New England.

But the Belichick connections runs surprisingly deep to Rutgers. His son Steve played college lacrosse there and was a walk-on long snapper during the 2011 season. Bill had good things to say about the school and former coach Greg Schiano.

Belichick has credited Greg Schiano in the past for helping his son learn the coaching side of football, which helped him progress with the Patriots. He will now coach former Rutgers standouts Devin McCourty and Duron Harmon. Steve represented his loyalty to Rutgers at his press conference back in April when he was announced as a full-time coach of the Patriots.

Bill’s also been spotted in the wild rocking Rutgers colors.

Belichick press conferences are notoriously bland, but when you ask the right question and get him in the right mood, he’ll riff about some seemingly random topics. Rutgers falls under that category. He really loves singing their praises, he did so here, here, here, and here just to name a few times.

So next time he does it, don’t be surprised. Bill Belichick rides for Rutgers whenever possible.
