Most of the first six weeks of the 2017 college football season were relatively sleepy. We had some big games and a big upset or two, but each week, it felt like we were just kicking the chaos down the road.
4 teams in top 10 lose to unranked teams in wild Week 7, and that’s just the start
Expect to see a whole lot of shakeup in the polls after all this.

In Week 7, chaos caught up.
These teams are no longer unbeaten, thanks to unranked teams ...
- Syracuse 27, No. 2 Clemson 24, with an amazing postgame scene after the Orange just straight-up whooped the defending champs.
- Arizona State 13, No. 5 Washington 7, all after a week of Huskies-ESPN beef over TV times. This one was on late, yeah.
- Cal 37, No. 8 Washington State 3, thanks to seven Wazzu turnovers and a flippy TD.
- Boise State 31, No. 19 San Diego State 14, knocking the New Year’s Six mid-major front-runner out of the lead.
- Memphis 30, No. 25 Navy 27, maybe knocking another team out of the New Year’s Six race.
... these ranked teams also lost to unranked teams ...
- LSU 27, No. 10 Auburn 23, and that undersells it. This was a damn 20-point comeback that came down to some weird clock stuff. ESPN had Auburn’s win probability up to 95.8 percent at one point.
- West Virginia 46, No. 24 Texas Tech 35 was another big comeback. WVU trailed by as many as 18. TTU’s win prob at ESPN was up to 96.3 percent!
... and these ranked teams nearly lost to unranked teams.
- No. 11 Miami 25, Georgia Tech 24, coming down to a juggling miracle catch.
- No. 12 Oklahoma 29, Texas 24, with the Horns nearly pulling off a huge comeback.
- No. 13 USC 28, Utah 27: the Trojans came back from 14 down, and then the Utes went for two to try and win it all at once.
- No. 17 Michigan 27, Indiana 20 (OT)? You know how this one went. This was yet another Indiana heartbreaker.
That’s half of the ranked teams that were in action, plus all sorts of business elsewhere!
Oh, and Louisville let Boston College score 45 points in an upset, maybe the most surprising number of them all, and Tennessee somehow turned four red zone trips into nine points in a loss, which is the least surprising thing here.
This is all in addition to the usual silliness, topped by a rabbit taking over Oregon-Stanford.
