Friends, I realize that there were a ton of perhaps more important college football games over the weekend, involving more prestigious and higher ranked programs, but let’s take a second to observe the nicest box score of the weekend, if not the entire season.
Let’s appreciate Lane Kiffin’s FAU dropping 69 points and over 800 dang yards on North Texas
Nice.

I realize that it is very funny that a football team coached by Lane Kiffin scored 69 points, but really, the entirety of this box score needs to be appreciated here for a second.
Here are a few of the highlights:
- FAU gained 804 yards of total offense, a Conference USA record. Only one other FBS team has hit that mark this season, and that was against an FCS opponent (Missouri hit 815 yards against Missouri State). The all-time FBS record is 1,021, set by Houston in 1989, but it’s a pretty likely that nobody else is going to hit 800 yards again this season.
- FAU had 460 yards of offense by halftime, which is more than many really good offenses will have over entire games.
- Five different Owls rushed for at least 68 yards, paced by Devin Singletary going for 123 and three touchdowns, on just 17 carries. As a team, FAU rushed for 447 yards on 48 carries, good for 9.3 yards a carry, which is quite a bit.
- FAU scored on its first 11 drives. Eleven!
Nobody is going to confuse North Texas with the 1985 Chicago Bears, but the Mean Green were undefeated in conference play before facing the Owls.
After two tough losses against Navy and Wisconsin to open the season, FAU has quietly had one of the highest scoring offenses in the entire country. In their previous game two weeks ago, FAU dropped a school record 58 points on Old Dominion. They beat Middle Tennessee State the week before, 38-20, giving them a transitive victory over defending national champion Clemson (thanks, Syracuse!).
Now, FAU is 4-3, but 3-0 in Conference USA play, and their first bowl trip since 2008 seems likely.
That, my friends, seems pretty nice.
