No. 19 Michigan got crushed at No. 2 Penn State on Saturday, 42-13.
It’s almost Halloween, and Michigan is tied with Rutgers for 4th in the Big Ten East
Relevant in the long run? No. Factual? You bet.

The loss dropped Michigan to 2-2 in Big Ten play. The Wolverines are pretty much out of the league’s East divisional race, because Michigan State, Penn State, and Ohio State are all 4-0, and two of those three teams have head-to-head wins over Michigan.
The Wolverines’ newest battlefront: Passing Rutgers for sole possession of fourth place. Because the two teams are currently tied for fourth place.
Both are 2-2 in conference, ahead of 1-3 Maryland and 0-4 Indiana.
Michigan is going to enter Week 9 in a tie for fourth in the Big Ten East.
Yikes.
With Rutgers.
Wow.
There’s all kinds of fine print that comes with this fact, I am aware.
The chances the Wolverines do not finish ahead of the Scarlet Knights are zero. Absolute, literal, unquestionable zero. We all know and accept this point.
Michigan will probably beat Rutgers by about 50, as is Rutgers’ tradition. That game is next week, which means the teams will be tied for exactly a week.
Rutgers’ overall record is 3-4. Michigan’s is 5-2. Don’t belabor the point.
That’s not really what I’m focused on right now, though.
I’m focused on it being late October in the year 2017 and Rutgers and Michigan being tied in the standings, because they have the same number of Big Ten wins and losses.
