Statue of former NIU Husky mascot Diesel unveiled Thursday night

More statues of very good dogs, please.

We need more statues of very good dogs in this world, to be honest. On Thursday night, Northern Illinois University unveiled its statue of Diesel, NIU’s former husky mascot that gave an adorable and magical high-five during a Husky home game in 2013.

Over the summer, some Northern Illinois fans started to raise money for the statue of Diesel, who sadly died of lymphoma in 2015. The GoFundMe Page ended up raising $16,366. It was enough to build the statue.

The fundraising effort was started by Diesel’s owner, who went to NIU:

Diesel’s owner, Tom Bonnevier, is among the group of NIU alumni who put together the Diesel Memorial Project which is raising the money for the project. Bonnevier describes the purpose of the project, “Diesel and our other Huskie mascots have done so much to lift the spirits and enjoyment of games for Huskie fans. We felt the statue would be a fitting tribute to our mascots’ contributions.”

The statue’s unveiling took place before kickoff of NIU’s home game against Eastern Michigan.
