LSU’s band helped incite the infamous ‘Neck’ chant, and Odell Beckham Jr. might be behind it

After LSU beat Texas A&M Saturday night, The Golden Band From Tigerland played a familiar tune that’s become a bit of a rare sound at Tigers games.

That’s “Neck,” the Cameo and Dem Franchize Boyz song “Talkin’ Out Da Side of Ya Neck.” On its own it’s a fine tune. You’ve probably heard a different band’s rendition at some point. But LSU fans have added some interesting vocals to their band’s rendition. You don’t have to even listen closely to hear it.

This has landed the band in trouble in recent years. In 2010 the song was banned, but brought back in 2013 and used sparingly for that reason. LSU passed out literature a couple of years ago to help curb the chant. But former Tiger Odell Beckham Jr. was in the stands on Saturday night, and apparently he came to the stands with a humble request. From LSU’s drumline captain:

But it appears that Beckham does have that much power.

And the word is that he offered to put his own money up if the band incurred a fine.

Earlier in the season, LSU’s band got into some hot water when it played while Florida’s band was doing a Tom Petty tribute just days after the rock singer died. Things got so heated that the band had to make a statement as to why it did that. Before that game even started, however, LSU hit “Neck” and got Florida’s PA system to issue a rebuke.

Keep an ear out next time you hear the LSU band play “Neck,” and if you’re feeling charitable, pass the hat around for any fine that may be coming. It’s the least you can do.
