Lane Kiffin’s resurgence on the FBS coaching carousel proves memories are short in college football. The oft-controversial head coach can add to a resume that’s devoid of meaningful accomplishments by leading the Florida Atlantic Owls to a league title. They take on the North Texas Mean Green in the Conference USA championship game Saturday afternoon at noon ET. The showdown will be broadcast on ESPN2 (live stream).

The game will be Kiffin’s first conference title contest as a head coach. With a win against UNT, he can tie his career high for most wins in a single season. With two more victories, he may even be able to sneak the Owls into the rankings for their first-ever appearance in the top 25.

While Kiffin is the headliner for most casual college football fans, the rise of the Mean Green may be the more interesting story. North Texas has been mired in the FBS’s weeds for more than a decade. Between 2005 and 2016, the program had recorded just one winning season. By dispatching FAU Saturday, it can claim the first 10-win season in school history.

FAU vs. North Texas News

North Texas improved to 4-2 on the season with a 29-24 win over UTSA on Saturday night, and the Mean Green did so in dramatic fashion. Down 26-22 with 1:07 left, North Texas had to drive 98 yards with no timeouts left. Mean Green quarterback Mason Fine led a brilliant, seven-play drive that gave his team a six-point lead with 10 seconds left. He found Rico Bussey Jr. on the last play for the TD, which was a beaut:

Devin Singletary has caught fire in 2017.

Devin Singletary has run for 100-plus yards in each of his last 10 games, making him FBS’s fourth-leading rusher. One of those monster games came against UNT, where he sprang for 123 yards — on only 17 carries — and three touchdowns. He’ll have the chance to shine in the spotlight Saturday, something he’s struggled with in 2017. In games against Navy and Wisconsin, he ran for a combined 94 yards.

FAU vs. North Texas prediction

FAU has home field advantage and has already romped the Mean Green 69-31 in Boca. The Owls are the best team in Conference USA, and they’ll prove it Saturday.
