What should I know about the two teams in the Arizona Bowl?
New Mexico State (6-6, 4-4 in Sun Belt)
A great story. The Aggies are in a bowl game for the first time since 1960, and the fourth time in program history. After going either 2-10 or 3-9 in each of Doug Martin’s first four years in charge, the team rebounded and got to 6-6 by beating South Alabama the day before bowl selections. New Mexico State will be among the easiest bowl teams in the country to root for.
NMSU has a pretty decent offense, which scored around 30 points per game. The defense isn’t good, but how many defenses really are? You can read more about the Aggies at Underdog Dynasty, which covers the Sun Belt.
Utah State (6-6, 4-4 in Mountain West)
The Aggies are back in a bowl game after missing out last season. They’ve now made one in six of the last seven seasons after not getting to a bowl between 1997 and 2011, when now-former USU, Wisconsin, and Oregon State coach Gary Andersen got them started on their current run with two straight Potato Bowl bids.
The Aggies have been impressive in spots. In a long-ago season opener, they gave Wisconsin some first-half trouble before ultimately getting overwhelmed. They beat (an extremely down version of) BYU and played competitively against Colorado State and Wyoming. They’ve got a 30-plus-point-per-game offense that cleared 50 on three occasions.
