What should I know about the two teams in the Cure Bowl?

Georgia State (6-5, 5-3 in Sun Belt)

The Panthers wrapped up their first season in a new home: the converted Turner Field, which used to house the Braves and is now called Georgia State Stadium. This program has come a long way and just had a pretty nice first year under head coach Shawn Elliott, formerly of South Carolina.

This marks GSU’s second bowl in its five years of FBS ball. The first was in 2015, when Trent Miles got a team that had gone 1-23 in its first two season up to a 6-6 regular season before a loss in the Cure Bowl. The Panthers could be relevant in the Sun Belt for a while.

Western Kentucky (6-6, 4-4 in Conference USA)

The Hilltoppers fell off a bit in their first year without Jeff Brohm, the head coach who left for Purdue after leading them to back-to-back C-USA titles. Some regression was always likely, and the Tops were indeed a lot worse this season — particularly on offense — than in 2016. That’s the bad news.

But the good news is that this is a solid program, and Mike Sanford was able to get WKU into a bowl in his first year on the job. This makes four consecutive years of bowling for the Hilltoppers, who’d never made a bowl at all in their brief FBS history before Willie Taggart took them to the Little Caesars Bowl in 2012.
