What should I know about the two teams in the New Mexico Bowl?
Marshall (7-5, 4-4 in Conference USA)
Marshall’s back in the postseason after a weird, sudden collapse to 3-9 in 2016. The Thundering Herd will play in their fourth bowl game in five years. They won the previous three, all from 2013-15, when they established themselves as a Group of 5 power under Doc Holliday. It’s good to have the Herd back to competency after whatever happened to them last year.
The strength of this bunch is its defense. Marshall defends the run really well and gets a lot of sacks on defense, and that’s covered up for a so-so offense.

Colorado State (7-5, 5-3 in Mountain West)
The Rams are bowling for the fifth season in a row, a streak started when now-former Florida coach Jim McElwain got CSU to the New Mexico Bowl in 2013. The Rams won that game, but they’ve lost their last three bowls, so they’ll try to bust that streak even as they’ve preserved another. (They gave up 61 points to Idaho in last year’s Potato Bowl, an epic shootout.)
The program moved into a gorgeous new stadium this year, one of the sharpest-looking in the whole country. They’ve emerged as one of the better programs in the Group of 5 conferences.
