The East Mississippi Lions are junior college football’s national champions.
‘Last Chance U’s’ East Mississippi Community College won the junior college national title
EMCC is back on top after a two-year drought.

EMCC is famously the subject of the Netflix show Last Chance U, which first came out in 2016 and released a second season this year. (Both were based on the season before.)
The Lions beat Arizona Western 31-28 on Sunday to claim the title. EMCC was out-gained on both a total and per-play basis, but the Lions grabbed a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and hung on for the final 45 minutes. EMCC flushed out the clock at the very end to secure the victory and win the school’s fourth national title.
The Scooba, Miss., school is a junior college powerhouse, with past and future Division I players scattered up and down its roster every year. The Lions won the NJCAA title in 2011, 2013, and 2014, but they’d fallen short in recent years.
Their 2015 season, the subject of the Netflix’s show’s first season, ended after the team got into an epic, ugly brawl while leading Mississippi Delta 48-0. The Lions were banned from the postseason and finished the season 8-1. They’d been on course to be a serious title contender that year but didn’t get the chance.
In 2016, during LCU’s Season 2, the Lions finished 11-1 but didn’t get a title game shot. They got back this year and capped an 11-1 year by winning on Sunday.
This team won’t be the subject of Season 3 of the show. Netflix changed locations for the upcoming slate of shows to Independence Community College in Kansas.
