College football’s a somewhat important deal in the state of Mississippi. The downfall of an Ole Miss head coach is thus a large story, and we got one on Thursday. Hugh Freeze’s resignation amid escort and NCAA scandals reverberated around the state.
4 front pages from Hugh Freeze’s Ole Miss ouster, ranked by how devastating they are
Freeze’s departure was a boon to headline writers.
I like writing on the internet. It’s a good medium for telling stories. But sometimes, there’s no better way to get the gist than by looking at a whole bunch of local newspaper covers.
After Freeze’s exit from Oxford, front page editors across the Magnolia State came through in a big way. Here is some of their work, ranked by how uniquely devastating each paper cover is.
Extremely devastating
That’s going to hold up as everyone’s indisputable champion. A cover that makes the reader giggle without losing sight of seriousness of a story like this one is a good cover.
Also really devastating
2. The Clarion Ledger (Jackson)
3. The Sun Herald (Biloxi)
The Ledger’s cover is only ranked higher because Freeze takes more space up on the page in that one. In the Herald, it’s mixed among other news, though it’s still very much above the fold. Slight devastation advantage to the Ledger’s.
Significantly less devastating
There are no puns here, which is an impressive show of restraint on the part of someone. And you know what? Sports aren’t that important. It’s good to write about tornado recoveries and cemeteries and give them top billing. Credit to the American for keeping the focus on things other than college football coaching changes.
The covers here are mostly via The Newseum, which collects them. Subscribe to newspapers.
