Johnny Manziel says he’s interested in coaching college football

Manziel wants to do “something involved with sports,” and coaching sticks out.

Johnny Manziel hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2015, and a return to the league doesn’t get any likelier with each month that passes.

Manziel’s NFL career has gone (or went) poorly for many possible reasons, football-related and not. But Manziel was a brilliant college player. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2012, when his Texas A&M Aggies beat Alabama, went 11-2, and won the Cotton Bowl. That kicked off a rise that didn’t stop until Manziel joined the Browns in 2014.

If Manziel can’t play in the NFL again, what’ll he do? He was asked this week during his time at a football betting event in Costa Rica.

”I’d do something involved with sports,” Manziel said, per ESPN. “I can’t get away from it,” he said. “I’ve had to ask myself that a little bit as of late over the past year, but at the same time I’d want to be involved in sports in some way, whether it’s coaching, whether it’s doing something like that. So I think that’d be my route.”

Manziel comes on at about the three-minute mark of this video:

Manziel said he’d “probably” want to coach college ball specifically. He’s still just 24, which means two things. One is that he’ll hopefully have a lot of years ahead of him. Another is that he’s really young to get a full-time coaching position on a college staff.

Manziel could search for a role as a support staffer or graduate assistant, but it’d be a real leap for someone to make him a full-fledged coach at this stage. Teams only get nine of those, though they’re soon to get 10. They aren’t easy jobs to land.
