New Mexico Lobos head coach Bob Davie is under investigation, and he reportedly faces allegations of player mistreatment and compromising drug-testing processes. On Wednesday, NM Fish Bowl first reported that the school has hired an “outside investigator” to look into the allegations. The university later confirmed the investigation in a statement:

The Davie investigation was initiated in recent months, sources say, following the latest round of athlete exit interviews conducted over the spring.

NMFishbowl.com has not been told who the school has tasked with carrying out the investigation, or what precisely triggered it. However, sources say that the severity and volume of the allegations made by players were deemed to be of a serious enough nature as to warrant outside review.

“I can confirm there is an investigation underway in Athletics,” said UNM spokesperson Cinnamon Blair. “We are not going to comment on the details or the individuals involved until the investigation is complete.”

Davie is currently in his sixth season with the Lobos, with whom he holds a 28-31 record as head coach. His team made it to back-to-back New Mexico Bowl appearances in 2015 and 2016, beating UTSA last year, 23-20. Prior to landing at New Mexico, he was the head coach at Notre Dame from 1997-2001, where he was the defensive coordinator from 1994-96. He went 35-25 as Notre Dame’s head coach before the school hired Tyrone Willingham.

The Lobos are 1-1 so far this season, beating Abilene Christian in their opener and losing to New Mexico State last week.
