Looking for an early leader in the 2017 Piesman Trophy race? Check out the Cal Bears.

Facing a critical 4th and 1 while trailing North Carolina 24-21, Cal quarterback Ross Bowers got creative, and hit Cal’s Malik McMorris for an 18 yard gain.

Cal would go on to score a touchdown on that drive, taking a 28-24 lead on the Tar Heels.

McMorris isn’t a stranger to making plays on offense. He hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass last season, in Cal’s blowout win over Oregon State, and has carried the ball multiple times, including for 20 yards against Stanford.

The very first sentence in his official bio on Cal’s website? Why, it’s “McMorris is a candidate for the 2017 Piesman Trophy.”

With plays like this, it’s easy to see why.
