Georgia’s Javon Wims made this catch by hooking his leg around an Alabama DB, maybe accidentally

It set up a field goal to give UGA a 6-0 lead.

This catch in Monday’s National Championship is kind of astonishing:

Georgia receiver Javon Wims caught a back-side fade from quarterback Jake Fromm. He did that with Alabama cornerback Anthony Averett draped all over him. The catch was really nice, though not far out of the ordinary in terms of degree of difficulty. It went in the books as a 16-yard completion to the Alabama 10.

What’s fun about this catch is the footwork involved, if you’re cool with me calling it “footwork.” Wims’ left leg was well on its way to landing out of bounds while the rest of his body was airborne. But it got hooked on Averett’s leg and stayed in the air:

That contact kept Wims in the air long enough to stick his left hand on the ground, as he secured the ball exclusively with his right hand.

Championships can come down to inches. Maybe they can also come down to whose feet get caught on whose legs along the sidelines.
