Welcome to Week 6 of the 2018 College Football Empires Map.
The updated College Football Empires Map, where Notre Dame takes the population lead
Each FBS team started the season in control of its immediate area. And each week, winning teams gain more and more land.
To begin the season, each FBS team was given control of its surrounding territory. Each game that involves one or two teams with territory results in the winner claiming all of it. Results carry on week to week, so teams are always in the process of trying to regain or expand land. For more detailed rules, check out Week 1’s explanation.
Here’s the updated map, with notes to follow.
Week 5’s largest land exchanges
- The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame defeated Stanford and took control over a large chunk of the West, as well as some land in Ohio.
- The Mountaineers of West Virginia held off a last-second counterattack by the Red Raiders of Texas Tech to steal four territories scattered throughout the country.
- Clemson, Washington, Ohio State, and NC State expanded their empires by sizable margins with their wins this weekend over Syracuse, BYU, Penn State, and Virginia, respectively.
Finding a new home
- Oregon handed Cal its first loss of the season and took over all the land that Cal had gathered, including the original lands of Cal, BYU, Arizona, and UNC.
- The East Carolina Pirates, who’d lost their homeland to North Carolina A&T to start the season, found their way back onto the map — including some coastline — with their last-minute win over Old Dominion this weekend.
- Army set up bases in New York and Michigan after they drove back Buffalo’s Bulls and gave them their first loss of the season.
- Troy found a new home slightly north after beating Coastal Carolina, who clearly suffered from the lack of coasts in Central Alabama.
- Boston College and Louisiana Tech found new land in Texas with their wins over Temple and North Texas.
Here is how the map has progressed throughout the season so far:
In Week 6, there are six games between teams that have land.
- College GameDay continues its streak of attending empire games as it attends Texas-Oklahoma game. People are saying there may be a shootout, possibly resulting in a red river.
- Both NC State and Boston College enter their game with several territories. The winner will have land in Texas, Ohio, Maryland, North Carolina, and Georgia.
- Florida will attempt to take over Alaska and Puerto Rico from LSU. LSU has the opportunity to take over Arkansas’ original land.
- Notre Dame will put all its land on the line against Virginia Tech in an attempt to take over the Hokies’ isolated territories.
- UAB and Louisiana Tech will compete for ownership of Kansas’ and North Texas’ original land.
- UCF will try to occupy not only a small space in the corner of Alabama’s mind, but also a chunk of land in the middle of Alabama’s on the map, thanks to a game versus SMU.

We’re also keeping track of a Historical version, which started in 2017’s season.
- With Ohio State’s win over Penn State, the Buckeyes took over half of the Historical map. If Ohio State was a country, it would be the world’s seventh largest country by area and the eighth largest by population.
- West Virginia defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders and took some land in the Southwest.
- Virginia Tech beat the Blue Devils and took their smattering of territories across the country and set up another Empire game next week as Virginia Tech and Notre Dame play Saturday night.
- The Pirates of ECU overthrew the monarchy of Old Dominion and are the black sheep of the Historic map, being the only team that isn’t receiving votes in the AP Top 25 or isn’t the reigning FCS champ.
