September Heisman winner Tua Tagovailoa and his fellow first-stringers have so blasted Alabama’s competition that former starter Jalen Hurts is still getting a heaping share of buckets.
Alabama’s *backup* QBs have more passing TDs than these 34 whole teams
The Tide’s backups get to play a whole lot, basically.

Tagovailoa and his nation-leading passer rating have barely appeared in any second halves at all, despite facing three Power 5 teams so far. (I say this because The Narrative seems to be that the Tide have played Mercer five times, which isn’t quite the case.)
Hurts, meanwhile, is tied for 83rd in passing touchdowns. Oh, and Hurts’ backup, Mac Jones, has thrown the second longest touchdown in Alabama history.
Hurts’ and Jones’ six combined passing touchdowns currently rank ahead of:
- Air Force
- Army
- Auburn
- BYU
- Central Michigan
- Florida Atlantic
- Georgia Southern
- Georgia State
- Georgia Tech
- Illinois
- Iowa
- Iowa State
- Kansas State
- Kentucky
- Louisville
- Maryland
- Michigan State
- Navy
- Nebraska
- New Mexico State
- North Carolina
- Northwestern
- Pittsburgh
- Rutgers
- San Diego State
- Tennessee
- Texas State
- Tulsa
- UAB
- UCLA
- USC
- Utah
- UTEP
- Wyoming
This has been your weekly check on whether Bama is even scarier than usual. The answer is yes.
