Meet Justin Fields, the 5-star Georgia QB who might replace Jake Fromm

Fields is likely to be Georgia’s starting QB eventually.

Four-star sophomore Jake Fromm got Georgia to a national championship game as a true freshman in 2017. But it’s possible the Bulldogs have a better QB on their roster.

Current true freshman Justin Fields was one of the most touted QBs in recent times. The five-star in the class of 2018 was widely regarded as one of the top two overall players in his year, along with five-star Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence. The overall consensus leaned toward Lawrence being a slightly better prospect, but in recruiting circles, it was not difficult to find people who thoughts Fields was the best player in the country, period.

Fields, who also plays baseball at UGA, is a tremendous athlete.

SB Nation’s Bud Elliott compares him to another baseball-playing QB:

Fields’ playing style is reminiscent of a taller Russell Wilson.

At about 6’3 and 220 pounds, Fields is big enough to take hits as a runner without wearing down, but fast enough to elude defenders. But he is a passer first and often will scramble, pull up, and launch a strike downfield.

Fields initial commitment to Penn State in Dec. 2016, but he backed off that pledge in June. By the late summer, the race for Fields appeared to be down to USC and a slew of Southeastern schools: Florida State, Georgia, Auburn, and Alabama.

Fields is seen as a dynamic personality, and has immense respect from the best prospects in Georgia and the Southeast.

He was the tip of the spear in Georgia’s incredibly good ‘18 class.

When Fields committed to the Dawgs after backing off a pledge to Penn State, it set the tone for the class that ended Alabama’s seven-year streak of top classes.

In addition, his commitment stands to change Georgia’s culture in several ways:

Landing Fields boosts Georgia’s recruiting even more than you might realize. Fields gives the Dawgs a prospect who just happens to be royalty on the camp circuit. He serves as a centerpiece and linchpin for two classes, not just one.

Six early five-stars in the 2019 class call Georgia home. Three will likely play receiver at the next level. Five-star junior receiver Dominick Blaylock picked Georgia on July 16, telling 247Sports’ Rusty Mansell that he wanted to get the news out early, just in case it helped the Dawgs’ chances with Fields. Before the Dawgs blew out Mississippi State, 2019 DE recruit Nolan Smith, another of three five-star juniors committed to the Dawgs, took a picture with Fields, an experience he described as “like meeting the president.”

Fromm’s extremely accomplished for a sophomore, but when he struggles (as he did in Week 7 against LSU), calls for Fields will get loud.

The true freshman appeared briefly in the third quarter and helped Georgia get into the end zone for the first time, after hours of struggling.

We’ll definitely see him again.
