The College Football Empires Map, where Florida is now the land leader

Each week, victorious college football teams take control of all the land previously gained by their opponent.

Welcome to Week 7 of the 2018 College Football Empires Map.

To begin the season, each FBS team was given control of its surrounding territory. Each game that involves one or two teams with territory results in the winner claiming all of it. Results carry on week to week, so teams are always in the process of trying to regain or expand land. For more detailed rules, check out Week 1’s explanation.

Here’s the updated map, with notes to follow.

Several teams expanded their holdings this week

  • Florida launched an all out assault against LSU this week to take the lead in land area owned, as the Gators took control of Alaska, Puerto Rico, and parts of Washington, Alabama, Louisiana, and Arkansas.
  • Texas won the Red River Showdown over Oklahoma, and in doing so took over several territories, including Oklahoma’s homeland and Hawaii.
  • NC State continued its undefeated season as well as its strategy to take random territories throughout the country, as the Wolfpack beat Boston College and took over the homelands of Maryland and Texas.
  • Notre Dame’s Saturday night win over Virginia Tech allowed the Irish to maintain their lead in territories owned, adding the homelands of Northwestern, Duke, Army, and Baylor.
  • The Group of 5 couldn’t let the Power 5 have all the fun. UCF expanded by beating SMU to take Memphis, and UAB beat Louisiana Tech to take over North Texas.

Back on the map!

  • The Pirates of ECU were no match for Temple and allowed the Owls to take Virginia Tech and Florida State’s homeland. This also marks the fifth different owner of Florida State, which has switched owners in every FBS game featuring the owner this season.
  • Michigan continued the tradition of a large “M” in the middle of Minnesota by beating Maryland to take control of Minnesota and Fresno State.
  • Northwestern finally held a halftime lead, and in doing so found their place on the map again, taking over FIU, Indiana, and Virginia with their win over Michigan State.
  • Texas A&M conquered Kentucky in overtime.
  • South Carolina State won its first game of the year, at the perfect time to defeat Morgan State and take over Coastal Carolina’s homeland.

Big land games in Week 7

  • Washington and Oregon will square off for possession of most of Utah and New Mexico as well as some other territories scattered throughout the map.
  • College GameDay will attend an Empires game for the seventh time this season, at the Wisconsin-Michigan game on Saturday. The winner will own most of Iowa and Minnesota, as well as parts of North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and California.
  • Colorado and USC will wage a late-night battle for a large northern empire. The winner will be placed firmly in first place in land possessed, if Alaska is excluded.

We’re also keeping track of a different Empires Map, which began in 2017.

  • Florida found its way back on the Historic Map for the first time since losing to Florida State last season with a win over LSU. The Gators took control of the homelands of Ball State, Cal, Illinois, USF, and Western Kentucky.
  • Texas found itself on the Historic Map for the first time since losing to Texas Tech in Week 13 of last season. Their win over Oklahoma gave them possession of UAB and Coastal Carolina. Or if you want a “Texas is Back” joke:

  • Temple defeated the Pirates who had overtaken UTSA’s homeland and became the ninth different owner of that land since the 2017-18 map began (UTSA, Southern Miss, UAB, Florida, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion, ECU, and Temple). This is the second most behind Kansas’ territory, which has had 10 different owners (Kansas, CMU, Syracuse, LSU, Troy, South Alabama, Georgia State, Appalachian State, Penn State, Ohio State)
