Who’s playing in the 2018 Dollar General Bowl?
Troy (9-3, 7-1 in Sun Belt)
The Trojans had never won 10 games in a season before 2016. But they’ve won at least that many each of the last two years, and now they can reach double-digits again. Troy has built a reputation as a giant-killer by winning at both LSU and Nebraska the last two years, regardless of the reduced states those teams were in at the time.
The Trojans missed an opportunity to win the Sun Belt by losing to Appalachian State on the last weekend of the regular season, but they still finished their season ranked a solid 50th in S&P+. Keep eyes on senior linebacker Hunter Reese, who leads the team with 14.5 tackles for loss, 19 run stuffs, and 7.5 sacks.
Buffalo (10-3, 7-1 in MAC)
The Bulls have had their best season as an FBS program, which goes back to 1962. Coach Lance Leipold, who previously built a Division III national champ at Wisconsin-Whitewater, has now made UB into a quality team after years of the Bulls being mediocre or worse. They’ve played at a top-50 level on both offense and defense, per S&P+ ratings, and there’s a non-zero chance that QB Tyree Jackson is the best player at his position in the entire city of Buffalo. It did hurt, though, to lose the MAC title game to NIU by a point. We’ll see how the Bulls rebound in this setting.
