With Texas’ help, Maryland honored Jordan McNair with a missing-man delay of game

McNair passed away in June after falling ill at a team workout.

As it beat Texas on Saturday, Maryland started its season with one fewer player than it was supposed to have. Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jordan McNair died in June after falling ill at a team workout on May 29. The conditions surrounding McNair’s death have led Maryland to place coach DJ Durkin on leave and install Matt Canada as the interim.

On the first play from scrimmage against Texas on Saturday, Maryland honored McNair by lining up in a missing-man formation, with nobody at right guard. The Terps intentionally took a delay of game penalty, and Texas coach Tom Herman declined the yardage:

Texas was onboard with Maryland’s plan before the game, according to Fox broadcasters calling the game. It was a nice show of sportsmanship by Herman and his team.

Maryland players have also opted to wear helmet stickers with McNair’s No. 79, to keep that number vacant until McNair would have graduated, and to name the offensive line meeting room in the team’s practice facility after him.

Maryland went downfield and scored a game-opening touchdown on this drive.
