In 2017, Maryland shocked a ranked Texas in a deeply weird Week 1 game in Austin. The Terps won 51-41 and probably could’ve beaten the Horns worse than they did.
Tom Herman’s Texas is now 0-2 against the Maryland Terrapins
Great return on investment for the Horns.

No. 23 Texas still wasn’t supposed to lose to Maryland in the rematch at FedEx Field this year. UT entered as about a 13-point favorite against a Maryland program that’s been in disarray, with head coach DJ Durkin on administrative leave following the death of player Jordan McNair. On top of all Maryland’s problems, Texas is — as it was last year — way more talented. But Maryland is threatening to beat Texas again, anyway.
And Texas just went ahead and lost to Maryland again, 34-29.
The Longhorns were driving with a chance to win the game at the end, but Sam Ehlinger threw an interception to Antoine Brooks to seal the game.
UT joined a prestigious club:
And also continued its inability to win while ranked:
The game went through a weather delay of about an hour.
That happened just after the start of the fourth quarter. At one point, this happened:
It could’ve been a rout. Maryland led 24-7 in the second quarter, thanks to three TDs produced by true freshman receiver Jeshaun Jones.
There was this 28-yard run ...
... and this 65-yard catch from Kasim Hill ...
... and then this 20-yard pass from Jones to Taivon Jacobs:
In the midst of those, Texas receiver Devin Duvernay made a brilliant TD catch, diving and reaching out to haul in a 39-yard throw from Sam Ehlinger:
But Texas went on a 22-0 run after that, into the third quarter, to go ahead. Maryland regained the lead on a Taiyon Fleet-Davis touchdown just after the start of the fourth.
In a nice gesture by both teams, Maryland took an intentional delay of game on the first offensive snap of the game. The Terps were lined up in a missing-man formation to honor offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who died following an offseason team workout.
Texas was aware of Maryland’s move, and coach Tom Herman declined the penalty yardage.
