Don’t look now, but a bunch of basketball schools are winning football games

Look at you, Indiana! And Kentucky! And Duke! And KANSAS!

Three weeks into the college football season, a bunch of football schools are playing good football. Except for Florida State.

More fun and surprising? A whole bunch of basketball schools are quietly having a nice start.

For example, Duke! The Blue Devils clobbered two Power 5 opponents (Northwestern and Baylor) and sit cool and pretty at 3-0. That’s just the third time they’ve done that since 1990! Good for Duke!

You know who else is undefeated? Indiana! Historically one of the worst power conference football programs, the Hoosiers went on the road to beat FIU, knocked off Virginia, and beat Ball State (who scared the hell out of Notre Dame a week earlier), and now they’re one of only five Big Ten teams without a loss. The last time Indiana started out 3-0 with at least one power conference win? 2005, when they beat Kentucky.

And hey, speaking of Kentucky, did you know they’re also 3-0? The Wildcats have wins over Central Michigan and Murray State, but their most important win was at Florida, their first against the Gators in 31 years.

But they aren’t the only ones! Lots of other schools that’ve often had more hoops success are having solid football seasons.

(“Basketball school” isn’t used here as an insult, to be clear. Some of these schools have fans who care more about football than any other sport. And some of these schools have had great football seasons in the last couple decades, too.)

Villanova beat Temple, giving the Wildcats transitive wins over famous football schools Texas and USC.

Syracuse is 3-0 and just beat Florida State for the first time ever (the Seminoles had won the previous 10 meetings).

Cincinnati is undefeated, with a win over UCLA (maybe don’t look up basketball school UCLA’s record right now), as are Buffalo and Akron, two basketball-focused MAC squads. So is NC State.

Memphis, Virginia, New Mexico, Louisville, and UNLV all have winning records too. That’s pretty neat!

AND HOW ABOUT THOSE KANSAS JAYHAWKS?

What has Kansas done after I insinuated they should at least think about dropping to FCS? They’ve won both of their games, including absolutely kicking the shit out of Rutgers, who is allegedly a power conference team. Kansas is now 2-1 in college football. Kansas, the team previously famous for only beating Texas, now has two wins over non-Texas teams. Rock Chalk.
