Georgia Bulldogs
The Bulldogs pushed Alabama to the limit in the National Championship Game last year, jumping out to a 13-point lead in the first half before eventually going to overtime and losing in a heart-breaker. Georgia lost a lot of talent from that team including its two leading rushers in Nick Chubb and Sony Michel as well as eight starters on defense led by Roquan Smith.
There is still plenty of talent on this roster to make a return trip to the SEC Championship Game a very realistic possibility, but the inexperience on both sides of the ball makes an early road test like this one very interesting.
Over its last 19 games as a road favorite of 10 points or more dating back to 2003, Georgia is a perfect 19-0 SU per the OddsShark College Football Database. The Bulldogs covered the spread in all three of their instances as a double digit road favorite last season.
South Carolina Gamecocks
South Carolina quietly put together an excellent season in 2017 with a 9-4 SU and 8-4-1 ATS record that was capped off by a 26-19 win over Michigan as 12-point underdogs in the Outback Bowl. Like Georgia, the Gamecocks have holes to fill on defense this season but will be doing so with a great defensive coach at the helm. The question for the Gamecocks is whether or not their offense can take a step forward in 2018.
Saturday’s total is set at 56.5 points. The UNDER is 20-5 in Georgia’s last 25 September road games.
If Georgia is able to fend off this road test, the sailing is pretty smooth until the team faces LSU on October 13, which will give the Bulldogs plenty of time to round into top form. A Gamecocks upset, on the other hand, would break the SEC East wide open.
