Aguila Vs. Toronto FC, 2012 CONCACAF Champions League: TFC Keep Hopes Alive With Win

A brace by Terry Dunfield led Toronto past Aguila 3-0 and kept them from Champions League elimination

Toronto FC entered Tuesday needing a win over Aguila to keep their hopes for a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals alive and that is exactly what they got. Terry Dunfield notched a brace and Quincy Amarikwa aded a goal of his own to lead the Reds past Aguila 3-0 in El Salvador and set up a huge match next month against Santos Laguna.

The win moves Toronto within three points of Santos, with a match in Mexico on October 24 to close that gap. It will be the final match day and the Reds will have to win by at least two goals to advance.

Amarikwa put the Reds in front after 16 minutes when he took Ryan Johnson's cross and somehow managed to nod it home from a very sharp angle. It was not the greatest of goalkeeping, but Amarikwa had himself his second Champions League goal and Toronto was a goal up.

The two players combined again on Toronto’s second goal, although Terry Dunfield was the one who got the goal. Amarikwa passed to Johnson, who found Dunfield for a tap-in that extended the visitors’ lead.

The match continued to go in Toronto's favor and the best Aguila could do was get lucky and play dirty. Johnson hit the bar and a nasty tackle on Luis Silva should have resulted in a red card, but it didn't and the rest of the match turned testy.

Dunfield put a bow on things four minutes from time with another easy finish, this time from Ashtone Morgan.
