Lance Armstrong interview: ‘I didn’t think I was cheating’

Despite admitting to using banned PEDs, Lance Armstrong said that he didn’t really think that was cheating, considering how widespread PED use was among cyclists.

Lance Armstrong viewed his use of performance enhancing drugs as a leveling of the playing field, he said during his tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

“I never felt like I was cheating,” Armstrong said.

Lance earlier in the interview equated doping in the Tour de France to having “air in our tires” and “water in our water bottles.” He added that winning the Tour in that era was not possible without the use performance enhancing drugs.

Armstrong said that he didn’t realize until later the magnitude of it all, and the magnitude of his fame.

”I knew it then but I knew it a thousand times more now. I didn’t know what I have. I didn’t understand the magnitude of that following. The important thing is that I am beginning to understand that ... I see the anger in people.

“I will spend the rest of my life trying to earn back trust and apologize to people.”

Cycling has been viewed by many as one of the dirtiest sports in the world, as its top riders have frequently been busted for various forms of doping. The only one to seemingly elude the grasp of anti-doping officials was Armstrong, who won seven consecutive Tour de France titles while supposedly clean. Armstrong was stripped of those seven Tour de France titles back in October of 2012 after a USADA report implicated him with PED use.
