Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix from Silverstone on Sunday, going from pole to winning with little issue. By the time his first pit stop came around, the Mercedes driver was able to rejoin the race in first place, and was essentially running on his own all day.

Everything behind him was chaos in the final laps.

Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari started in second and third, and other than some early scrapping, those positions held throughout the race until the final few. Valtteri Bottas started back in the top 10 due to a grid penalty, but by Lap 40 he was behind Vettel and pushing hard for the third podium spot.

Bottas made a brilliant pass on Vettel to take third place with a few laps to go, and he set his sights on Raikkonen. Raikkonen, dramatically, sustained a puncture on his front left tire, elevating Bottas to second and Vettel to third.

Then it was Vettel who suffered a puncture, and Raikkonen and Max Verstappen, who both pitted in the penultimate lap, made it past Vettel. Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull finally made it past Nico Hulkenberg in the final lap to take fifth, and both of the two finished ahead of Vettel.

After this race, Hamilton narrowed the gap in the Drivers Championship to just a single point.

The start saw Max Verstappen of Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari dueling for third place, but a safety car was quickly deployed when Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat of Toro Rosso came together on the opening lap. That ended Sainz’ race, and after the safety car the action resumed.

On Lap 14, Vettel made a huge move to pass Verstappen, but the young driver didn’t yield an inch. They dueled for a couple turns, with both drivers going off track. In the end, Verstappen kept the place. Vettel and Verstappen kept battling for several laps, but the Ferrari could not get past.

By Lap 19, Vettel elected to pit an try the undercut. He fitted the soft tires, and came out in sixth, behind Nico Hulkenberg of Renault and Bottas. Verstappen came in the next lap and unfortunately, he had a long pit stop, about 3.4 seconds, and that cost him. He came out behind Vettel.

Raikkonen went into the pits on Lap 25, and came out in third, behind both Mercedes drivers, who had yet to pit. Mercedes called Hamilton in on the next lap, and he came out just in front in Bottas, maintaining his lead in the race.

Once again, the Force India cars of Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez had issues with one another. Perez, on the fresher tires, wanted past Ocon so he could chase down the Kevin Magnussen of Haas. Unfortunately, Ocon wouldn’t move aside and Perez saw his advantage slowly slip away.

Bottas finally came in on Lap 33 and he came back out onto the track in fourth position, but also right behind a couple of back-markers, hurting his chances of chasing down Vettel. At about the same time, Fernando Alonso became the third car to retire, despite a new spec McLaren Honda engine.

Ricciardo, after pitting, was behind the Force India cars, but he quickly made his way past Perez, who had burned up his tires trying to get past his teammate. Ricciardo then quickly moved up into eighth by passing Ocon, and had his sights on Magnussen. He quickly made it past him too, up into seventh place.

By Lap 43, Bottas was trying to take Vettel’s third-place spot. He got very close, but went off track as Vettel locked up big time. Bottas eventually took the spot from Vettel. His engineer came on the radio and said “great job,” and Bottas replied “minimal talking.”

At that point, Bottas was about seven seconds back of Raikkonen on Lap 45, and he wanted to take that spot. That’s when Raikkonen had to stop due to the puncture. Verstappen had a free pit stop and was called in as well, and he kept his position.

Suddenly, Vettel had a puncture as well, and was passed by Raikkonen, Verstappen and many others. A chaotic race came to an end.
