F1 2017: New points standings after British Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes is now just one point back of Sebastian Vettel in the Drivers Championship standings after winning the Formula One British Grand Prix on Sunday. Vettel was poised to keep the gap wider, but suffered a puncture on the penultimate lap.

That allowed Mercedes to finish 1-2 and increase their lead in the Constructors Championship significantly. They now have 330 points to Ferrari’s 275. Max Verstappen of Red Bull was also able to get past Vettel after the puncture, helping Red Bull in third place.

Kimi Raikkonen also had a puncture, but finished in third due to his positioning on the track when the puncture happened.

Force India only managed a couple of points as the two drivers continued to battle each other and not the rest of the pack. Williams managed to pick up just a single point, while Toro Rosso, in sixth in the Constructors Championship, didn’t get a single point.

Renault picked up eight points due to a great drive from Nico Hulkenberg, but they are still third from last in the Constructors Championship.

The bad luck continued for Jolyon Palmer of Renault, who suffered a hydraulic issue in the warm-up lap, prompting the pack to take a second warm-up lap. Palmer was out of the race. With lights out, Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen dueled for third place but the big action came further back in the pack, where Daniil Kvyat of Toro Rosso crashed into teammate Carlos Sainz at Becketts.

That ended Sainz’s race, and had Kvyat in last place at the back of the grid. Kvyat was handed a drive-through penalty for the incident around Lap 10. After the first round of pit stops, Hamilton was in first, Bottas in second (though he had not stopped yet), Raikkonen in third and Vettel in fourth.

Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull had made his way up to sixth place after starting near the back of the grid. The Force Indias, once again, ran into some trouble with each other. Sergio Perez was faster than Esteban Ocon, and on fresher tires, but his teammate wouldn’t let him by and his tires quickly lost their advantage.

Another retirement from McLaren’s Fernando Alonso occurred on Lap 34. He lost power and had to retire the car, despite it being a new-spec engine. At that point, Stoffel Vandoorne, his teammate, was out of the points positions as well.

Force India lost a couple of points when both Perez and Ocon were passed by Ricciardo, made even easier due to their own squabbles. Nico Hulkenberg earned some points for Renault after running a very consistent race. Hulkenberg didn’t try to block the guys he knew he wasn’t going to beat, and stayed out of trouble.
