If 49ers QB Alex Smith was your fantasy football starting QB then you've probably got a big problem at QB right now. He's out 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury and the starter for at least the first game of his absence will be Troy Smith.
Fantasy Football, Week 8: Troy Smith Has Some Hope As 49ers Starting QB
Ohio State fans remember him as the 2006 Heisman winner. Since then he’s gone on to a backup role in his three and a half years in the league.
There's only a small bit of data on him as a starting QB. In 2007, his rookie year, he went 1-1 as a starter for the Ravens. He completed 32-of-60 passes for 371 yards and a pair of scores including zero interceptions. Those aren't impressive but they were also the last two games of his rookie year. I think it's fair to think there could be some improvement.
So what’s Smith going to be working with in San Francisco? Well, not much. The 49ers are 31st in the league in scoring. They can’t rush the ball very much (they’re usually behind) which won’t help him. Their offensive coordinator has already been fired. There aren’t a ton of reasons to be optimistic.
The 49ers Week 8 opponent, Denver Broncos, have given up over 24 points in their last three games. The pass defense isn’t bad but Smith is bound to have some opportunities if the Broncos have another 59-yard type of day like they did last week against the Raiders.
If Smith can give you 200 yards and a TD, I’d take it. That’s what you’re hoping for based on the small sample size of his career as a starter. Remember, you were starting Alex Smith at QB. You don’t have many options at this point.
