Fantasy Football Week 5 Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em: Kenny Britt Primed For Breakout?
With bye weeks upon us, it’s decision time with starting lineups. Get the right advice on who to promote to the big show and who to leave in your fantasy reserve with this week’s Start/Sit.
Last week saw Start/Sit come back to earth, as 5 of 6 selections were off the mark. Feet squarely on the ground, we decide on a “Charles in charge” and find out that “Greene” shouldn’t mean go this week.
Start
Donovan McNabb (vs. GB) - Do you think the Redskin QB is riding high after defeating his former team in front of a surprisingly genial Philadelphia crowd? This week McNabb looks to keep things rolling against a Green Bay defense that will be without LB Nick Barnett and SS Morgan Burnett. RB Ryan Torain will exploit the absence of Barnett as good hard running early gives way to passing lanes as the Skins try to keep up with the high powered Green Bay offense. In a Week 2 matchup against another high octane offense, the Texans, McNabb threw for over 425 yards on 38 pass attempts. The McNabb / Cooley connection to thrive as only five teams have surrendered more yardage to TE's. McNabb's a high-end QB1 start this week, especially those that award more points per passing yard.
Jamaal Charles (@IND) - The Chiefs bye week meant a lot of healed scalps for fantasy owners scratching their heads over the lack of touches the spark-plug back has been given this season. And while this writer is painfully aware of the presence of KC starter Thomas Jones, this week an element missing so far this season should convince HC Todd Haley of who the superior player is: Astroturf. A fast track at the Luke should highlight Charles' game-changing, homerun speed. It's not a stretch to say that the Chiefs could be behind quickly and Jones' plodding, chew the clock style won't be an effective strategy for a comeback. Charles is destined to break out this season as he's just too talented to be a 12-touch back in the NFL. But even if he is still limited to a light workload, he should have no problem bursting through a weak Colt front seven on his way to a patented long score. He's a high upside RB2. Did you know: No player ran for more yards after first contact in 2009 than Charles.
Kenny Britt (@Dal) - The Cowboys return from their bye in this one, meaning they've had two weeks to engineer a gameplan for stopping Titan RB Chris Johnson. Somewhere on the periphery of their defensive strategy will be stopping Kenny Britt, the second year Rutgers standout. Britt takes over for the injured Justin Gage who had been keeping Britt's seat warm. Britt has actually scored TDs in his previous two games but this "start" is based on the likelihood of solid reception and yardage totals. Britt has led the Titans in targets the past two weeks in spite of him seeing a limited number of snaps. With a change to being part of the action every play, Britt could approach a solid 6+ receptions and 70+ yards. He's a high end WR3 this week.
Sit
Shonn Greene (vs. MIN) - A look at Greene's stat line from last week would convince most that he had taken over as the Jets feature back. But with a 6 yard per carry/catch average, while topping 100 rushing yards for the first time since 2007 it's Ladanian Tomlinson that looks more like a spry second year pro. Tomlinson looks more like, well LT and while Greene remains a solid back with an elite offensive line he probably won't see anywhere near the 22 carries he saw in the week 3 blowout. This week's contest against the Vikings and the Williams Wall won't help his fantasy forecast any, either. View Greene as a risky flex play this week as he spends most of his Sunday watching the greatest RB of this era continue his comeback tour.
Malcom Floyd (@OAK) - Teams don't throw in the direction of Oakland CB Nnamdi Asomugha. Through four games the Raiders are allowing the fifth fewest fantasy points to WR's. Phillip Rivers would be wise to continue playing catch with TE Antonio Gates or even to throw to Legedu Naanee or RB Ryan Mathews before looking to take on Asomugha. While Floyd possesses the skills to do damage on a handful of receptions, his 14 receptions through four games suggests he's not close to being Rivers' go-to guy.
Larry Fitzgerald (NO) - What a difference a year makes. While Fitz spent 2009 catching passes from future hall of famer (?) Kurt Warner, 2010 has seen Fitz catch little more than fantasy slack for his supbar performance. This week Fitzgerald will try to get the Cards back on track as rookie QB Max Hall makes his NFL debut. No doubt Fitz will be a huge part of the gameplan as he will try to become his QB's security blanket on some short routes. But as we've seen, targets haven't always turned to stats for the AZ offense. Expect Hall to struggle, bringing Fitzgerald down in the process. I can't believe I'm saying this, but sit Fitzgerald in favor of your options with true upside like Brandon Lloyd or Mark Clayton this week and hope that Hall is able to develop a rapport quickly with his all-world receiver.
