LaDainian Tomlinson’s departure from San Diego obviously necessitated the drafting of Ryan Mathews, but it’s also had a sweeping impact on Shonn Greene, another running back typically taken high in most fantasy drafts. Greene’s and Mathew’s numbers have been similarly underwhelming through three weeks. Mathews because he was hurt in Week 2 and Greene because LT has gotten more carries than anyone would have reasonably expected before the season started.
Fantasy Football, Week 4 News: Ryan Mathews Returns To Practice
↵After missing last week’s loss to Seattle because of an ankle sprain, Mathews rejoined Chargers practice on Wednesday and appears ready to go for Week 4. Fullback Mike Tolbert has shined when given the opportunity this season and played adequately in Mathews’ absence. That and the fact that Mathews is a rookie may mean the Chargers won’t be in a hurry to rush Mathews back into a full workload carrying the ball.
↵Nevertheless, on Sunday San Diego hosts Arizona, owners of the NFL’s 31st ranked run defense. So, even if Mathews might get less than his regular share of touches, there’s a chance for some decent output against the Cardinals’ porous defense. With bye weeks getting underway, someone thin at RB might be forced to give Mathews a look to start.
