Can you believe it? The 2011 NFL season is at the midway mark, heading into Week 9 of the season. By now, you’re either feeling confident about your roster because you’re in the playoff hunt in your fantasy league, or you’re in desperation mode as you try to recover from a tough first-half of the year. Whatever the case, it’s time to look at the fantasy football waiver wire for Week 9.
Our partner, numberfire.com, looks at how players are performing recently against the regular projected averages to identify mid-level guys who could be on the way to having consistent fantasy value. The higher the percentage above average, the hotter they are, and likely to be hot on the waiver wire.
Michael Crabtree is a talented receiver who has been trying to recover from a foot injury all year. In Week 8, he finally showed that he might be there with 54 yards and a touchdown. If by chance he's available in your league, he makes a great mid-season wide receiver pickup. In Tennessee, Chris Johnson has struggled, so last week the Titans turned to Javon Ringer who put up nice numbers running and in the passing game, he could see more action going forward. Kevin Faulk returned to the field on Sunday after being on the PUP list to start the year, he didn't have a great game but Tom Brady will likely use the veteran going forward.
Looking for more receiver help? If you can't get Crabtree, consider guys like Early Doucet, Laurent Robinson or Jonathan Baldwin.
On the downside of the ledger, Montario Hardesty, who was filling in for Peyton Hillis, injured his calf and is likely to miss time. He's a definite candidate for a drop. Ryan Torain was a hot name when Tim Hightower went out, but last week he, and the rest of the Redskins, produced little on offense. Now, the Redskins have claimed Tashard Choice who was cut by Dallas, further muddying the running back picture in Washington. Bernard Scott turned in a decent day for the Bengals in Cedric Benson's absence, but with Benson returning this week from suspension, Scott should go back on the waiver wire.
