Chiefs OC defends limited use of Jamaal Charles: Fantasy implications

Chiefs offensive coordinator Brian Daboll defended the limited use of Jamaal Charles on Sunday, saying that the way the game developed didn’t allow many opportunities to run the ball. We break down the fantasy implications.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Brian Daboll defended the limited use of Jamaal Charles during Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders, saying that the way the game developed didn't allow for many rushing opportunities. Charles had just five carries for four yards and three receptions for six yards in the loss.

“You go as the game develops. You try to run or pass based some on what you think you can do and some on what they’re doing,” Daboll said. “If they’re doing a good job of stopping the run over and over, we’re going to try and move the ball in another fashion. If we’re running the ball well, we’ll continue to run the ball.”

Fantasy Impact: Head coach Romeo Crennel didn’t exactly give Daboll a ringing endorsement after the game, saying “I’m not exactly sure either” when asked about the lack of touches for Charles. The explosive running back is, by even an untrained eye, the best weapon the Chiefs have on offense, so Crennel was not alone in his sentiment.

Look for the Chiefs to involve Charles more in the offense going forward, especially after the outrage in the wake of Sunday's loss. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, the Chiefs face a San Diego Chargers defense this week that is allowing just 3.6 yards per carry on the season. Charles is a good enough fantasy option to warrant fantasy consideration no matter the matchup, but this week may not be one of his better outings.
