San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith could be cleared for contact by the end of the week, coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday on KNBR-AM. Smith suffered a concussion in the tie against the St. Louis Rams in Week 10 and missed the team's win on Monday against the Chicago Bears.
Alex Smith could be cleared for contact by week’s end: Fantasy implications
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith (concussion) could be cleared for contact by the end of the week. We break down the fantasy implications.

Colin Kaepernick started in place of Smith and threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns against Chicago. Harbaugh did not say which player would start on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
Fantasy Impact: The 49ers have been good recently under Smith but Kaepernick provides a spark that makes him more intriguing to fantasy owners. Harbaugh is not likely to tip his hand before it’s required but Kaepernick is worth adding for fantasy owners who are looking for some late-season help at quarterback.
Kaepernick, if he’s the starter, would be a fringe No. 1 fantasy quarterback for Week 12. If it’s Smith, he has less fantasy value but would still be a decent No. 2 fantasy option.
